Southern Counties Cup Rd 1

Hackney Under 11’s 0, Lewisham Under 11’s 2

A goal in each half was enough for an excellent Lewisham side to dash Hackney’s Southern Counties Cup hopes for this season.

Despite a lively opening when Anselmo Gomes enjoyed some penetrating runs on the right and a late rally in the second half, Hackney were always chasing the game. The visitors were quicker to the ball, stronger in the tackle and more decisive in their passing throughout. It was no surprise, then, that Hackney goalkeeper, Stas Butler was soon in action and had to be at his best to turn away shot two goal-bound efforts.

Lewisham took the lead after fifteen minutes when they pounced on a weak defensive clearance and, despite better commitment from Hackney after the interval,  the south Londoners remained on top and doubled their advantage with ten minutes to go.

Hackney then enjoyed their best period of the match and when substitute Montel Shalders-Gayle was put clean through on goal, it took an outstanding save from the Lewisham ‘keeper to preserve a clean sheet.

Lewisham now travel to Gloucester for a fascinating Second Round tie.
